2019 05 Garden On Poster

The 2nd of a series of 4 talks this garden season; this talk along with hands on activities will get you pumped about herbs!

Herbs not only enhance the beauty of your garden but can liven up your cooking and benefit your health too! Versatile, easy to plant and care for, relatively trouble free, and multitudes of way to incorporate them into your garden make learning and using herbs almost a requirement for the edible gardener to grow and enjoy in the Calgary Garden.

In our informal workshop learn:

-Just what makes a herb a herb;

-The functions of herbs in the garden;

-Some of the best herbs to grow in Calgary

-How to propagate by seed, division, layering and cuttings;

-Caring for your herbs throughout the season

-Harvesting, using and preserving your herbs

Plus, you will have the opportunity to plant up a container with a selection of herb seedlings to grow and enjoy this season.

All materials and equipment supplied.

Garden with us!

We have had a volunteer come forward to help with membership coordination so we will be sending out contracts and assigning beds for the 2019 season.

Priority will go to Southwood residents but those from surrounding neighbourhoods are welcome to apply.

Membership for the season is $20 plus a $50 deposit for the first year and you need to be a member of the Southwood Community Association. (

Please email if you are interested in renting a bed, volunteering in another aspect or just getting on the email list.

Urgent need for Membership Coodinator – 2019

SCGarden-Web_Bed Rental
We need someone to coordinate members for the 2019 season or we will not have beds for rent this season. Please contact Teresa at as soon as possible.

The volunteer membership coordinator collects contract/payments/deposits for those interested in renting garden beds in 2019 ensuring all members have a Southwood Community Association membership. They would then pass on payments to the treasurer for deposit and assign beds for the season (People usually have the ability to request the bed they had last year).

The membership coordinator would reach out to members who have shown interest on their contracts to coordinate workdays/meetings (ordering compost, compost turning, compost spreading, mulch laying, watering…). They would also assign monthly to-do lists and ensure that members are taking care of their beds and the communal spaces. At the end of the season, they would make sure beds are appropriately cleaned up and return/destroy bed deposits.
